Turning climate-related information into added value for traditional MEDiterranean Grape, OLive and Durum wheat food systems

NEWSLETTER nº 6

June 2021

Dear Madame or Sir,

We are sending you our sixth newsletter, where you will find the most recent advancements the project has been working on. This time, we are proud to bring to your attention that the MED-GOLD project has been flagged by the European Commission as one of the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation contributors in shaping the EU Climate Adaptation Strategy adopted in March 2021.

In the first half of 2021, our activities have mainly focused on shaping the exploitation of the MED-GOLD climate services. In particular, these last months, various participatory activities have been organised with the objective to assess the benefits of the MED-GOLD Dashboard and other climate services together with users from the grape, olive and durum wheat sectors. In addition, the potential upscaling of the MED-GOLD Dashboard to other regions and crops is being explored at the moment.

In the following sections you will find more details about these and other activities that can be of interest for you.

Enjoy the reading!

The MED-GOLD Dashboard

The MED-GOLD dashboard is an easy-to-use visualisation tool for the grape/wine, olive/olive oil and durum wheat/pasta sectors, which provides access to information on past climate and predictions of future climate at different time scales. The tool has been co-developed with users to ensure that it addresses their needs and expectations. You can access the dashboard by visiting htpps://dashboard.med-gold.eu.

More information at: med-gold.project@enea.it

You can find a demonstration of the MED-GOLD Dashboard in the videos below, which illustrate particular applications of climate information at different time scales to support specific decisions in agriculture, focusing on the sectors of interest of the project.

The videos have subtitles available in different languages, including English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French and Greek. Subtitles can be activated through the configuration button.

You can also download user guides of the MED-GOLD Dashboard, which are concise, handy documents with a summary of the main functionalities of the dashboard for your sector, illustrated through three different use cases. The user guides can be downloaded in different languages from the project website.

Assessing the benefits of the MED-GOLD Dashboard with users

To assess the potential value of the MED-GOLD Dashboard for the wine sector, the project organised an online workshop addressed to users from Sogrape, a Portuguese wine company which is one of the end-users participating in the project. The workshop took place last April 16, 2021 and was attended by 19 participants from different departments of Sogrape, including senior management, oenology, viticulture, R&D, production and logistics.

A new online workshop was organised on June 15, 2021 with users from the Spanish cooperative DCOOP, who is also a partner in the project. This workshop looked at the benefits of the MED-GOLD Dashboard for olive sector users. A piece of news about the event will be published on our website soon.

Other climate services tools

Climate services in the MED-GOLD project do not stop at the MED-GOLD Dashboard. The project has also been collaborating with companies involved in the consortium to enhance the services that they are currently offering through the addition of climate information at longer time scales.

Olivia platform

Olivia is a decision-making tool designed for the olive sector that provides guidance to farmers and technicians for optimal irrigation, fertilisation and pesticide application. Integrating advanced artificial intelligence, satellite data and climate information for the past, present and future, the tool helps farmers to manage their production in an easy and efficient way. In the framework of the MED-GOLD project, the platform has been upgraded based on feedback received by engaging with olive sector users in Andalusia, Spain.

Granoduro.net decision support system

Granoduro.net is a commercial decision support system for the sustainable management of the durum wheat crop, which is used by farmers, technicians and agronomists in the Barilla supply chain. It provides advice for crop management based on past climate data and future predictions. In the framework of the MED-GOLD project, a new prototype functionality using seasonal forecasts was added to the system.

Survey to assess the usability of the MED-GOLD climate services

We have launched an online survey to assess the potential usability of the project climate services for olive/olive oil, grape/wine and durum wheat. Have a say about your needs for climate information and help us improve the MED-GOLD climate services! The survey is available in different languages and takes around 10 minutes to complete. All responses will be kept anonymous and confidential. Open until 30 July 2021.

Survey from the VitiGEOSS project

Our sister project VitiGEOSS (Vineyard innovative tools based on the integration of Earth Observation services and in-field sensors; www.vitigeoss.eu) has launched a survey addressed to wine producers, growers, agronomists, enologists and everyone interested in vineyard management and operations. It takes around 10 min to complete and it is available in different languages. We encourage you to fill it in!

Events with MED-GOLD presence

March 5, 2021

Second National CLIMALERT Workshop »
Online

The project champion user for the wine sector, A. Graça (Sogrape), used an example of the MED-GOLD dashboard’s long-term projection for a presentation on ‘Water and vineyards: limits of planning and possible solutions’. In this presentation, an outlook of water availability for Douro valley vineyards until 2060 was used to support the case for use of urban wastewater treatments in viticultural irrigation.

European Geosciencies Union General Assembly »
Online

Project partners ENEA and BSC convened one for the conference sessions entitled ‘Climate services - underpinning science’. This session counted with the participation of various MED-GOLD partners: M. Gratsea (NOA) presented MED-GOLD results on the ‘Return period analysis to assess the long-term impact of climate change on the olive sector in Andalusia, Spain’, a work done in collaboration with DCOOP. M. Terrado (BSC) talked about ‘Visualisations in climate services’, highlighting some common practices of various projects, among which we find the MED-GOLD project. B. Solaraju-Murali (BSC) presented his work on multi-year prediction of drought and heat stress to support decision-making in the wheat sector, done in collaboration with JRC. S. Calmanti from the project coordination team (ENEA) shared some of the lessons learned in the project about ‘Overcoming conflicting notions of climate forecasts’ reliability and skill in the agricultural sector’. Finally, the coordinator A. Dell’Aquila (ENEA) announced the Living Lab 2021.
