Turning climate-related information into added value for traditional MEDiterranean Grape, OLive and Durum wheat food systems

December 2021

Dear MED-GOLD subscriber,

We are sending you our seventh newsletter, where you will find the most recent advancements the project has been working on.

In the second half of 2021, our activities have mainly focused on showcasing the MED-GOLD platform to interested stakeholders by organising a number of participatory workshops that will continue in 2022, as well as taking part in several events related to the agri-food sector. We have also released a policy brief on developing sectoral climate services for sustainable adaptation in agriculture, with the aim to connect services as those developed in MED-GOLD with the targets set by initiatives such as the EU Green Deal, the forthcoming Climate Law and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our project’s final event that will take place in March 2022.

You can find more details on our activities in the next sections.

We would like to wish you Merry Christmas and all the best for the coming year. In the meantime, enjoy reading our newsletter!

Assessing the benefits of the MED-GOLD climate services

The MED-GOLD Dashboard, the visualisation tool developed in the project for the grape/wine, olive/olive oil and durum wheat/pasta sectors, was showcased to interested users in a number of participatory workshops and meetings.

Activities with project users included a workshop to assess the benefits of the MED-GOLD dashboard for the olive sector. The workshop counted with the participation of users working in different areas of the Spanish agri-food cooperative DCOOP, and was held online in June 2021. This event followed a workshop held earlier this year, aimed to assess the benefits of the tool for the wine sector users in the SOGRAPE company (read more here and in our previous newsletter).

Showcasing the MED-GOLD Dashboard

The MED-GOLD dashboard was showcased during the last meeting of experts of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) in October 2021, and during a meeting of the COPA-COGECA Working Party on Olives & Olives Oil in November 2021.

Other participatory workshops are organised from December 2021 to February 2022 to showcase the dashboard and discuss its potential usability in the different sectors, as well as explore the conditions required to upscale and use the tool in organisations beyond those involved in the project.

Documentation for users

User guides for the MED-GOLD Dashboard

User guides for the different MED-GOLD sectors are available, illustrating the different features of the MED-GOLD dashboard and use cases on how to apply the tool in a decision-making context. The guides are available in English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French and Greek on the publications section of the project website.

MED-GOLD Policy Brief

A policy brief on “Sectoral climate services for a sustainable adaptation in agriculture” has just been released this December 2021. The brief discusses the role of the MED-GOLD climate services in addressing the needs of agri-food sector users and contributing to sustainability across the triple bottom line (i.e. environmental, economic and social).
